This I Would Like To See

Bill & Hillary Clinton had lots of friends when they occupied the White House. Seems they are learning it is difficult to know who your real friends are when you occupy a position of power.

I was chief deputy to a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. About a year before he decided against running for another term of office my boss asked me to recommend who might replace him if he chose to leave office before the end of his term. That's because when that happens California's governor fills the vacant seat, hopefully with someone you think will do a good job in the position.

I'd witnessed how people treat elected officials who no longer enjoy the power and perks of public office so I enjoyed urging my boss to reconsider his decision. "There's nothing more pathetic on the face of this earth than a former member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors," I told him each time the subject came up, "with the possible exception of an ex-county supervisor's chief deputy."

Now I must revise my thoughts on the matter. It's clear that a former President of the United States whose wife wants to be president can be even more pathetic than an ex-county supervisor or his chief deputy.

It is from this background that I feel a sense of connection with Bill Clinton, a man I've never met. He is being badly treated by people who in the past lovingly kissed his derriere at every opportunity. But it seems there was no loyalty among those whose high-profile careers were made possible by their association with Bill Clinton. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson comes to mind.

I should add Governor Bill Richardson to the "pathetic list." He's even more pathetic than Clinton. That man weighs so much it must take extraordinary effort to get down on his knees to kiss Barack Obama's you-know-what.

Not that I will vote for her, but sometimes I think I wouldn't mind seeing Hillary Clinton become president. Watching Bill & Hillary get even would be so much fun.
